Fire and Ice

Linda's voice:

The beech tree, which is not native to North America, does not drop its leaves in the fall. The brittle brown leaves cling tenaciously to the branches throughout winter, rustling in the slightest breeze. February’s late afternoon sunlight metamorphoses the quivering dry leaves to flickering flames but does not melt their covering of snow, just as age does not diminish the warmth and depth of the human spirit.
